X-FAB breaks ground on new cleanroom in Erfurt

Fab4Micro project creates a key foundation for the industrial-scale production of highly integrated microsystems and photonics solutions

Today, X-FAB was joined by representatives from government, industry, and academia to break ground on a new cleanroom at its Erfurt site. Through the Fab4Micro project, X-FAB MEMS Foundry GmbH is expanding its manufacturing capacity for highly integrated microsystems and photonics, thereby continuing the transition of the Erfurt site into X-FAB Group’s microsystems hub.

The new facility is intended to support growing demand from the automotive, industrial, and medical end markets while also making an important contribution to strengthening Europe’s sovereignty in semiconductor technology.

The Fab4Micro project is receiving a total of Euro 127.4 million in funding from the German federal government and the Free State of Thuringia under the EU Chips Act.

“Today’s groundbreaking ceremony marks an important milestone for X-FAB and underscores our long-term commitment to innovation, growth, and supporting our customers worldwide,” said Dr. Gabriel Kittler, CEO of the Erfurt site.

The Fab4Micro project is funded by:

  • German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy on the basis of a decision by the German Bundestag
  • Thuringian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Rural Areas
