X-FAB Develops Sensor Components as Part of the Thuringian PANDIA Funding Project
As part of the PANDIA project funded by the Thuringian Development Bank (Thüringer Aufbaubank, TAB), X-FAB is collaborating with IMMS and JETI to develop highly integrated spectroradiometers capable of analyzing light significantly faster and more sensitively. The focus lies on the development of novel line sensor chips that combine two innovative sensor concepts.
X-FAB provides optimized photodiodes based on its XS018 technology, featuring an integrated electronic dark reference. This design aims to eliminate the need for mechanical shutters and additional cooling, thereby reducing measurement time, increasing system robustness, and lowering costs. Additionally, X-FAB is also investigating Single-Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPADs) as a novel sensor concept.
SPADs enable the detection of individual photons, allowing the analysis of extremely weak light sources.
By integrating analog-to-digital converters and temperature sensors directly onto the sensor chip, the project makes a significant contribution to the miniaturization and performance enhancement of future spectroradiometers.
PANDIA strengthens the region’s innovative capacity through the close integration of microelectronics and optics directly on site. The project began on September 1, 2025, and will run for three years.
