X-FAB and Cymbet Announce Manufacturing PartnershipNEWS, Januar 19, 2011.
World’s Highest-Volume Solid-State Battery Production to Open in Lubbock, Texas
Lubbock, Texas and Elk River, Minn. – The X-FAB Group, a leading analog/mixed-signal semiconductor foundry and Cymbet Corporation, the leader in solid-state energy storage solutions for microelectronic systems, today announced a manufacturing cooperation agreement that will result in the world’s highest-volume solid-state battery (SSB) production facility. Located in Lubbock, Texas, this new production facility will significantly increase Cymbet’s manufacturing capacity for its EnerChip™ SSB to satisfy the growing global demand for eco-friendly rechargeable solid-state batteries.
To support Cymbet’s requirements, X-FAB is implementing a so-called “fab in a foundry concept” – a separate clean-room dedicated exclusively for the Cymbet product line. Morgan Thoma, Cymbet VP Manufacturing and Operations said about the partnership: “X-FAB is the ideal partner for Cymbet. Their technical capabilities, manufacturing expertise and quality systems, including ISO 9001/9002, ISO/TS 16949 and ISO 14001 certifications, are the perfect match for Cymbet’s manufacturing expansion.”
According to Lloyd Whetzel, President and CEO of X-FAB Texas Inc.,X-FAB’s expertise in CMOS process technologies for power management solutions and clear commitment to green energy solutions make the cooperation with Cymbet a logical step in the foundry’s More than Moore approach. He summarizes it as follows, “Partnering with Cymbet demonstrates X-FAB’s commitment to our customers’ long-term success. This EnerChip solid state battery fabrication facility extends our manufacturing capabilities into new cutting-edge green technologies, and results in the world’s highest-volume SSB production facility.”
Qualification of the line is expected to be done by mid-2011, and ramp production will begin at that time. X-FAB will deliver PCM (process control monitor) tested wafers to Cymbet. The new facility is expected to generate up to 100 new jobs during the next five years. Financing for this project was secured through a partnership with the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance (LEDA), Texas Economic Development Bank, X-FAB Texas, Inc., and Cymbet Corporation.
