X-FAB Group Milestones

1992   
The companies X-FAB Gesellschaft zur Fertigung von Wafern mbH and Thesys emerge from the former semiconductor collective “VEB Mikroelektronik” in Erfurt, Germany. Microelectronics manufacturing has a long tradition in Erfurt dating back to the 1960s.

1999   
Thesys spins off its ASIC and ASSP business into today‘s Melexis. The foundry business is continued under the name X-FAB Semiconductor Foundries GmbH.

2000   
X-FAB Texas Inc. in Lubbock, Texas, becomes a subsidiary of X-FAB Semiconductor Foundries GmbH. The facility was formerly owned by Texas Instruments.

2002   
X-FAB acquires the Zarlink fab in Plymouth (UK). The newly named X-FAB UK Ltd. becomes a subsidiary of the X-FAB Group.

2006   
Merger with the Malaysian foundry 1st Silicon. 1st Silicon is renamed X-FAB Sarawak Sdn. Bhd.

2007
X-FAB Semiconductor Foundries AG takes over ZFoundry, the wafer manufacturing facility of ZMD AG, located in Dresden, Saxony, Germany. The subsidiary is renamed X-FAB Dresden GmbH & Co.KG.
           
2009   
The manufacturing site in Plymouth, UK, is sold to Plessey Semiconductors. A team of highly skilled design and development engineers remains at X-FAB’s branch office in Plymouth.
    
2011
X-FAB expands MEMS capabilities and capacities and becomes shareholder of MEMS Foundry Itzehoe (MFI).

2012
The manufacturing of MEMS is further expanded. A noble metal center is set up at the Erfurt location to enable gold deposition and patterning capability. The limited company X-FAB MEMS Foundry GmbH is founded. X-FAB becoming the majority shareholder of MFI and renames the company as X-FAB MEMS Foundry Itzehoe.
